Go Beyond Being a Goal Setter and Turn Into a Goal Getter

By Leanne Hoagland-Smith

Do you set goals from New Year’s resolutions to financial goals to business goals? If you are like most people, you probably do set goals. So, how is your goal setting batting record when it comes to hitting goals out of the park?

Is not a completed goal much like a home run? The action steps necessary to achieve the goal are much like running the bases. Depending upon where you planned to hit the ball as well as how much you practiced determines whether or not your complete the goal or get that home run.

Even though I am not a great sports fan, sports provide a great example of how to actually achieve goals. Numbers are everything in sports. How many points, runs or touchdowns you scored? How many turnovers or errors you made? No wonder sports are so much connected to positive mental attitude, teamwork, etc.

There is a great book first published over 70 years ago entitled the Go Getter. This is a story about a young salesman who overcame adversity both personal and professional. His success was because he focused his thoughts on everything he could do and not on what he could not do. I suggest that you buy it to totally appreciate why you must go beyond goal setting to goal getting.

Possibly the reason you set more goals than get more goals is because you fail to commit your goals to writing. Or, maybe the goals are truly not yours and are not measurable. Remember, if you cannot measure it, you cannot manage it.

Other factors that limit goal getting include:

Belief system
Negative conditioning
Lack of a goal setting process
No goal setting worksheet
No action plan for life

Use the above checklist to determine if these factors are contributing to your inability to become a goal getter. Now is the time to reverse your fortune and truly get those goals as you travel the road to success.
