The importance of eating right and getting good nutrition dates back to 400 B.C. when Hippocrates said “Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food.” The problem is these days it can be difficult to get all our nutrition from our food and that’s why health supplements are so important.
Today more than any time in history our food system is lagging behind in providing us with the nutrients we need. The only other way to get these nutrients is by taking health supplements.
It’s not that the industry isn’t working at proving health food sources but we eat less fresh meat and produce than our ancestors did, and too much pre packaged foods. Even our fresh foods travel longer distances and have lost much of their nutritional value before we eat them.
Perhaps our food sources tie directly to the increase in many life threatening illnesses such as heart disease and cancer. In fact studies have shown that heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and cancer are all directly related to what we eat and how active we are.
Up until the last ten years or so nutritional supplements were mainly taken by athletes and those that were seriously body building. These were the people that understood the importance of feeding your body right. But the tide is changing as more and more people recognize the need for health supplements.
Athletes take nutritional supplements because they understand that nutrition and fitness go hand and hand. They know that the body needs minerals, vitamins, fats, and amino acids in order to correctly feed the cells in our body. These essential nutrients are also responsible for your strength, your mood, and recovery time from exercise or strenuous work. And it’s those same essential nutrients that all of us require to lead a healthy life.
By eating right, eating and eating plenty of nutritious foods you can get many of your required nutrients. For example just one 8 ounce glass of orange juice will give you your daily required vitamin C intake. And of course fresh fruits and vegetables are packed with vitamins and nutrients that protect against heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and many other serious illnesses.
But we don’t always eat right or eat the correct amounts of nutritious foods so we don’t always take in the proper nutrients that our body needs on a daily basis. That’s why it is so important to supplement your daily food intake with a quality health supplement.
Now just like everything else in life not all health supplements are created equal, so you are going to want to do your research, and be sure to read the labels before buying any supplement.
A high quality supplement will improve your body’s ability to function and increase your energy levels. Once you’ve chosen the supplement you want to take, you’ll need to test it and see if it’s working for you. You can do this by taking it for two weeks and noting any changes in your energy levels, your sleep patterns, and how you feel overall. Stop for a week and see if you notice any decreases or changes. If you do then you know the supplement is helping. If you don’t then it’s time to try another supplement until you find the one that works for you.
When choosing a health supplement there are three main things to check. First you should check the raw numbers on the product label. This tells you the active ingredients and the potency of those active ingredients. Then you need to find out if the product is processed in a way that destroys some of the nutrient values, meaning what you read on the label will be inaccurate. Now the bottle isn’t going to tell you much about how it’s processed but a quick search on line can reveal lots about a manufacturer. Lastly you need to make sure that all the nutrients can be absorbed by the body.
We lead very busy lives that drain our body, the rate of serious illness or disease seems to be growing around us, and we often don’t get a chance to eat as healthy as we would like. So make sure you add quality health supplements to your diet to give your body the best fighting chance to keep you healthy and happy.
